Our Holistic Approach to Sheep Healthcare: Continued
The conventional path wasn't working. We were caught in a cycle of chemical dewormers, battling ever-resistant parasites and compromising the very health we sought to protect. Our flock deserved better, and so did we. That's when we embarked on a transformative journey, seeking natural alternatives and rediscovering the profound wisdom of holistic care.
We consulted with experts – holistic veterinarians and seasoned shepherds who had walked this path before us. Their guidance, combined with our own deep dive into herbal remedies, supplements, and nutritional science, began to slowly illuminate a new way forward. Crucially, we made paying closer attention to our flock, reading their subtle cues – a shift in appetite, a dip in energy, or a change in behavior a priority.
One of our first breakthroughs came with herbal dewormers. We knew the pharmaceutical options were losing efficacy and, more importantly, wreaking havoc on our sheep's delicate gut microbiomes. We firmly believe gut health is the cornerstone of all health. After some experimentation with raw herbs, we found a company with established protocols using wormwood – a true game-changer. We also integrated gut-supporting supplements like Garlic Barrier mixed with apple cider vinegar, with the mother! While garlic juice helps with parasites, we primarily use it to foster a healthy, acidic gut environment that parasites detest. These natural remedies, though not instant fixes like chemical dewormers, proved to be far gentler and, in time, remarkably effective. Molly's Herbals' wormwood-based regimen has become a staple for us, proving that natural options, coupled with balanced guts, are truly key.
Diet became another crucial focus. We began supplementing their grazing with a variety of nutrient-rich forages and really paying attention to the quality of their hay. We ensured they had access to mineral and made sure their water was clean and fresh. A healthy, well-nourished sheep is naturally more resistant to parasites and disease.
Herd Health
Audra and I are diligently checking the overall health of the sheep, which includes giving each of them a thorough ‘pedicure’ to ensure their hooves are in good condition.
If it’s not obvious,we do enjoy ourselves!
Again, gut health is paramount!
Our approach became less systematic and more individualized which takes more time up front but seems to save time in the long run.
The transition wasn't without its challenges. There was a learning curve, plenty of trial and error, and a fair bit of "non-scientific" experimentation (which, frankly, suits my personality!). But the results are undeniable. Our sheep and lambs are thriving – healthier, more robust, and visibly happier. Their energy levels soar, and they exhibit resilience to environmental stressors. So far we've celebrated a significant reduction in parasite load and, consequently, a dramatic decrease in the need for any harsh deworming products. This time of year, late spring and summer when we have rain and heat, is normally our worst time for parasites. So far we’ve seen great results.
This journey has reinforced for me the importance of working in harmony with nature, respecting the innate wisdom of animals, and trusting in the power of holistic healing.
It's a path we are committed to continuing, ever learning and ever striving to create the best possible environment for our flock.
And I encourage you, whether you're raising sheep or simply seeking a healthier lifestyle, to explore the wisdom of nature and consider a more holistic approach.
It might just change everything.
