The Scent of a Memory: How My Mother’s Pillowcase Brought Me Back to My Senses
My mom and me
There is no sense as powerful, or as stubborn, as smell. It’s the closest thing we have to time travel. For me, one scent eclipses all others: the smell of my mother.
It wasn’t a perfume. It was the simple, comforting scent that lingered on her pillowcase. It was a mix of her skin, her soap, and that indefinable essence that was uniquely her. Burying my face in that pillow was the scent of safety, of comfort, of home.
Then, for a long time, I gave up scent.
Like many people, I learned about the harmful chemicals, endocrine disruptors, and synthetic compounds hiding in commercial fragrances. I read about how "fragrance" on a label can be a Trojan horse for hundreds of undisclosed ingredients. So, I purged my life. Out went the perfumes, the air fresheners, the scented lotions, and the dryer sheets. I was convinced that to be healthy, I had to live in an unscented world.
And I did. For years.
But an unscented world, I discovered, feels a little flat. It’s like listening to music with the volume turned almost all the way down. Life was missing a layer of richness.
I found myself missing that deep, transportive power of smell. I missed the immediate lift of joy you get from a whiff of real flowers on the breeze. And most of all, in quiet moments, I missed the comfort of my mother’s scent. I missed that feeling of reassurance that a simple smell could provide.
That longing set me on a new path. I realized the problem was never the scent itself—it was the source. The joy of smell is a natural, human experience. The smell of pine in a forest, of jasmine at night, of a lemon cut open—these are gifts from the earth.
I was determined to find a way to bring that sensory joy back into my life, and into the lives of others, without the compromise. I wanted to capture that "lift of flowers or spring air" that I missed so dearly, but in a way that was pure, honest, and natural.
This is the very reason our business is built on natural, essential oil-based scents. We source from the earth, not a lab. We want to create products that evoke a feeling, that spark a memory, that provide a moment of comfort—just like my mother’s pillowcase did for me.
